Bloody Hell: 21 Savage reveals his British origins, Jay-Z hires a lawyer
Twitter pretty much had a mini-meltdown this past Sunday when it was revealed that rapper 21 Savage was detained by ICE in Atlanta on the grounds of his illegal immigration status.
On first glance, the trending topic caused a WTF moment for everyone. As far as his fans were concerned, he repped Zone 6 in Atlanta so excuse us while we are left scratching our heads.
Fast forward to today, we've got Twitter beefs brewing between Demi Lovato and Wale and Instagram rifts between Chris Brown and Offset over memes that were a product of the breaking news.
Absolutely nothing about 21's current legal situation is funny regardless of how quickly you can throw together a catchy graphic in hopes of going viral.
In a statement released via representatives, 21 Savage (whose real name is She'yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph) states that he, in fact, was born in the United Kingdom. However, he clarified that he immigrated to the United States at the age of 7, left to VISIT the United Kingdom and came back stateside later on in the month. Unfortunately, his visa expired in 2006, unbeknownst him and he, in turn, filed for a visa in 2017 once everything came out.
Abraham-Joseph's ties to the community as well as several family members who are either US citizens or lawful permanent residents should be grounds alone to let him stay. If for nothing else, let him stay for his children.
As of late, 21 Savage has been kept on 23-hour lockdown with limited communication with his legal team and family, according to his lawyer, Charles H. Kuck.
Artists such as J. Cole and public officials such as Georgia representative, Henry C. Johnson have come to his defense and Jay-Z was no different.
The New York-born rapper and entrepreneur worked quickly and secured another lawyer to aid in the immigration proceedings.
Abraham-Joseph's immigration visa application has been pending for years so this begs the question of whether there is some other reason for his detainment.
All in all, I pray that 21's situation gets sorted out to the point where he can come home to his children and live in the country that he has called home for years legally.
