STAY WOKE: The Importance of Being Informed In Today's Society
"Oh, you're a woke woman," "Stay woke, sis," "We should be living in a woke world," All of these statements have been tossed around like a frisbee but does anyone really realize how important and CRUCIAL it is to be woke in today's society? Now that 45 (I refuse to acknowledge him as the president) is in office, people have decided to become more big and bad now that they have some sort of support. Not to mention, we need to educate ourselves on the backstory of everything in order to make informed decisions instead of blindly following trends just because the celebrities make it hot.
Let's take a recent occurrence in the celebrity news as a prime example. Over the weekend, singer Raury participated in the Dolce & Gabbana fashion show along with celebrity kids Cordell Broadus, Diggy Simmons and Christian Combs (All looking like some snacks, mind you.) The musician walked in the middle of the show donning an oversized yellow sweatshirt, matching shorts and a clear bomber all branded with the classic Dolce & Gabbana logo which seems normal right? Well when it came time for the final parade, Raury was caught sporting a completely different look! He removed his shirt and written across his chest were the words, "Protest D&G," "Give me freedom" and "I am not your scapegoat." He credits his decision to some research that he had come across about the company prior to him walking in the show as a means to educate himself. There had been negative press that focused on a t-shirt that they had started selling that read "Boycott D&G". Although the premise may have been innocent, it still hit home for the Georgia-born crooner. The fashion giant has since addressed the design claiming that it was "not real". Check out Raury's answer for making such a bold move in his interview with GQ Magazine below:
"Everyone was blinded by the opportunity. First time being in Milan...Dolce & Gabbana giving us free clothes. It's lit. This is Dolce's "Millennial' campaign. But a lot of millennials didn't know that Dolce & Gabbana styles Melania Trump or had made this T-shirt mocking boycotting. But my nerdy ass looked into it,"
Naturally, Raury's decision was met with massive backlash from his fellow models, who tried to talk him out of his power move. But he credits that to their lack of knowledge on the subject. Once he made his final appearance on the runway, Raury tried to make a swift exit but was sidelined by some security guards who were trying to forcibly remove him.
It doesn't matter how you spread awareness, what matters is that you are informed. With the state of affairs of the country currently, it pays to be in the know. So with that being woke, stay woke my brothers and sisters of all races, STAY WOKE!
